The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has investigated over 60 hoverboard fires since 2015. In 2016, the CPSC recalled over half a million hoverboards due to fire and explosion risks. Recently, the CPSC re-issued warnings regarding the dangers of hoverboards after two girls who were killed because of burns they suffered in a house fire that is believed to have started after a defective hoverboard exploded.
What Is Causing Hoverboards to Explode?
The lithium-ion battery packs in hoverboards are behind the device’s fire and explosion problems. Due to a defect, the battery packs overheat, which can result in hoverboards smoking, catching fire and exploding. Hoverboard brands that have been recalled over the issue include:
