Why Were Toyota RAV4s Recalled?
The manufacturer is recalling the vehicles because of a fire risk. In the Toyota RAV4 recall announcement, the company stated that 2013 through 2018 models have an issue with the size of the vehicle’s battery. Improper tightening of the battery’s hold-down clamp could cause the battery to shift when the vehicle makes a sharp turn, potentially causing a short circuit and a fire.
The company did not confirm whether the defect had already caused vehicle fires. Toyota stated that it continues to work on a solution to the problem and that once it develops a new hold-down clamp, battery tray, and positive terminal cover, dealers will replace the equipment in owners’ vehicles for free. Meanwhile, the company plans to notify affected vehicle owners by late December 2023.

The RAV4 recall follows another recall announced by Toyota that affects approximately 750,000 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles. Owners of Toyota vehicles can check to see if their vehicle has an active recall by using the lookup tool on Toyota’s website and entering their vehicle’s license plate number or VIN. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also maintains a recall database for vehicle owners to look up active vehicle recalls via the vehicle’s VIN.
