The Mighty Writers mission is, “To teach Philadelphia kids to think and write with clarity in order to achieve success in school, in work and in life.” Founded in 2009 by Tim Whitaker, Mighty Writers has become a thriving nonprofit with multiple locations in Philadelphia and hundreds of volunteers. Nancy Winkler’s son volunteered at the organization last year. Stewart and Sally Eisenberg have been supporters as well.

The free programs hosted by Mighty Writers are designed to help Philadelphia children between 2 and 17 years old develop their writing skills. Each location hosts 40 to 50 writing workshops annually that serve more than 2,500 children. The volunteers who help coordinate these workshops consist of local educators, illustrators, authors and other writing professionals.

Mighty Academy is an after-school tutoring and writing program for children between the ages of 7 and 17. Other programs prepare high school students for college. Mighty Writers also has a mentorship program that provides individualized support for children.

Mighty Writers has shared several impressive statistics on its workshops and programs. According to Mighty Writers, 87 percent of the children who participated in its programs scored proficient or better in grade-level writing.
